Sitali Pranayama – Cooling breathing technique

I know that you all are probably as excited to try this technique as I was when I first tried it, so I’ll get right to the point. I just want to warn you of two things – Firstly, when you try out this breathing technique, make sure that your head is up and your neck is upright. This will ensure that your muscles in your chin and neck are not blocked or constricted. Remember, this is done without doing jalandhara bandha when you inhale. On another note, make sure you combine this with others so that your mouth can continue to be saturated in saliva.

The first step is to stick your tongue out, curl it so that its sides meet, and close your lips around it in a circle. (You should be able to inhale and exhale through the hole your tongue and lips have formed). Breathe air in slowly and smoothly. Pay attention to the sound. Is the air flowing in well? Adjust your lips and tongue accordingly so that your breathing doesn’t sound odd, shaky, or rough in any way. Be sure to, when exhaling, drop your head so that you can do jalandhara bandha, and then perform Ujjavi pranayama.

The second step in this technique is to inhale with your tongue in this very cooling position. Drop your head once more into the jalandhara bandha & make sure to hold your breath when your lungs are only lightly filled (this is also known as Antara Kumbhaka). Be sure to exhale for a longer period of time than you inhaled. It will be best if you employ the Ujjavi breathing technique when you exhale.

The next step in this technique is to inhale with your tongue in this very cooling position. Again, drop your head into the jalandhara bandha, & be sure to exhale for a longer period of time than you inhaled. Do the Ujjayi technique upon exhalation. Halt your breathing after you lightly exhale, leaving a small amount of air in your lungs. (Also known as Bahya Kumbhaka).

The fourth and final step in this technique is to continue your cooling position. Once more, you will drop your head into the position of jalandhara bandha. Hold your breath when your lungs are only lightly filled. (Antara Kumbhaka). Again you will exhale more than you inhaled. Be sure to do your Ujjavi technique upon exhalation.
