Surya Namaskar Sun Salutation

One of the most famous and important yogic asana is the Surya Namaskar which is a sort of salutation to the sun. According to the “Vedas” the time of sunrise is the most “favourable spiritual time” of the day and hence Surya Namaskar is to be performed at this hour. This asana must always be practiced on a mat and not on the floor. The Surya Namaskar Yogic Asana is a series of breathing exercises and various postures and hence is a complete workout in itself.

This asana is done in the following way:

Stand on the mat on the floor while putting your face towards the direction of sun; both your feet should be touching each other. Now closing your palms together like when saying “Namaste”, bring it to the heart’s level. Keeping your palm still in closed position, raise your arms above your head and bend them backwards slowly and then bend your backbone backwards while inhaling deeply throughout the process. Next, exhale slowly and bend forward in an endeavour to touch the earth.

Keep bending forward until your head is touching your knees and your hands are in line with both the feet.

The next step involves moving your right leg back in a wide backward step, away from your body while inhaling deeply. Now putting your feet and hands firmly on the ground and keeping your left foot between both the hands, slowly raise your head upwards and straight. While staying in this position for few seconds, exhale slowly and bring your left foot together with the right one. Now try forming an arch by keeping your arms straight and raising your hip while your head is aligned with your arms. Again staying in the same position for a while, exhale slowly. Now you should lower your body on the floor until your hands, feet, chest, knees and even forehead are all touching the floor.

Taking a deep breath, raise your head and bend it backwards as much as you can, keeping the rest of your body on the floor as in the previous step. Exhaling slowly, bring both your feet together. Align your head now with your arms, keeping them straight and bend your hips and head upwards so as to form an upward arch. Taking a deep breath again, move your right leg in a wide backward step like before. Now put your left foot between both the hands while keeping the other foot and hands firmly on the ground raise your head upwards. Now, stand up straight, bend as much as you can to touch your feet with your fingers, without moving your feet. Exhale deeply while doing this. Now, inhale, closing your palm near your heart and raise them above your head.

Being in the same position, bend backwards and then stand straight with both the feet touching and bend your arms and bring them close to your heart like when you say “Namaste”

These are the steps of performing immensely beneficial Surya Namaskar which will set your mood and fill you with positive thoughts throughout the day and keep you away from most of the diseases.
