With all the recent studies about young girls and their body images, it’s understandable why parents would worry. One study showed that as many as 13% of girls own up to having eating disorders, and that a whopping 25% think that they need plastic surgery, and would go through with it if they had the means. It’s terrible that we live in a time when so many young women hate themselves and their bodies so much that they would try such desperate means to lose weight. No one can make anyone else accept the way they are, and if girls are going to force themselves to lose weight in order to keep up with unhealthy and unrealistic ideas of beauty, they might as well do it in a way that will be healthy.

Yoga is not only great for the body, but the mind and soul, as well. It is a great way to build up a positive body image that is realistic as well as healthy. And because of the way it also works on the mind and soul, young teens will feel less stressed and more centered. Some might ask, though, what exactly the difference is between yoga and any other sport or exercise. The answer is simple. Team sports or sports in general build harmony from the outside. Happiness and one’s worth is determined by the crowd’s cheers.

When someone practices yoga, the harmony comes from within, and their worth becomes self-worth. Too, while yoga releases stress and promotes unity from within, the constant pressure to win and be the best cause more stress for a person when they’re doing sports. Overall, yoga is a much more peaceful and relaxing way to explore ones body than running around on a field.

Because of the focus on oneself, yoga helps to create a great love and acceptance of one’s body. It also turns self-consciences-ness into self-awareness. Teenage girls are very subjective to those around them, but with a balanced mind, harmonized soul, and whole being, the taunting of others are easy to ignore and laugh off.
