Yoga Asanas for Thyroid

Nowadays, statistics show that women over the age of 35 are 30% more likely to develop a thyroid problem or disorder. A simplistic explanation would be that today’s technology makes it easier to detect an ailment, which leads to more diagnoses. Even with all of today’s technology, researchers believe that hypothyroidism is still vastly under diagnosed. No one seems to know what causes it. Some researchers believe that it can be caused by things such as stress, toxins from the environment, and nutritional imbalances or deficiencies.

There are only 2 kinds of thyroid disorders; Hyperthyroidism (which is when the thyroid secretes hormones too quickly, which can ultimately lead to autoimmune diseases), and Hypothyroidism (which occurs during fetal “life” or infancy, and can inflect someone throughout adulthood. It can lead to mental disabilities as well as dwarfism).

Thankfully, there are types of yoga that can help with thyroid problems. Yoga works because it stimulates the thyroid, pineal, adrenal, and pituitary glands. Because of the way yoga works, it can normalize these glands, which in turn will help out your body. It can stretch and keep your neck limber, as well as tone and strengthen our nervous systems.

Your thyroid gland has a large influence on your weight and how young or old you may look, due to the fact that it has control over your metabolism. With certain yoga positions, your thyroid gland will become stimulated and work at its maximum efficiency. And as a bonus, your pituitary gland is also stimulated, causing it to work better, also.

Some poses that should help with your thyroid are Yashtikasana, Uttanpadasana, Sarvangasana, Matsyasana, and Naukasana. They are physical poses (asanas) that will help to exercise your thyroid and cause it to properly function. Suggest breathing techniques for the thyroid gland are Jalandhara Bandha, Kapalabhatti, Bandhas, Ujjayi, and Anuloma-Violma. They will have similar effects as the poses, but they are breathing techniques and shouldn’t cause you too many problems.

Always remember to check not only with your doctor, but a certified, licensed yoga instructor before starting a yoga regime. These are sometimes difficult, and if you’re already not at your health peak, it may be even more difficult. Always be safe now than sorry later!
