Yoga Breathing for Weight Loss

A lot of beginners ask if there’s a connection between specialized yoga breathing and weight-loss. The answer being – of course there is! With a wide variety of yoga techniques, it’s pretty hard not to lose weight. But your level of weight-loss is heavily dependant upon the technique you choose, and what your needs and desired outcome are. For example, you might like to try power yoga (a specialized grouping of poses that are linked without any pauses between them) or hot yoga (performing yoga in a heated room to encourage extra calories burn) to lose more weight.

That being said, there are other, less strenuous types of yoga, but they aren’t as calorie-burning as those mentioned above.

Due to the way oxygen works in your body (oxidizing and frying fatty cells) practicing your breathing is going to be one of the most important things you do. It not only burns off excess energy, it turns stored fat into exercise energy! Remember that these techniques aren’t limited to yoga – they can be applied to all of your activities. Yet another benefit to deep breathing is that it is proven to perk up mental potency as well as concentration. Be warned, though, long term use of these deep breathing techniques can throw your mind, body, and spirit out of sync.

A couple of nifty little tidbits: You can boost your metabolism by doing specialized poses like the fish posture, which focus specifically on the thyroid gland. This will help you to burn off calories more quickly, and enables you to do strenuous activities for longer periods of time. You can also do some specialized asanas such as ‘churning the mill’ and ‘dynamic spinal twist’ to help fatty tissues in the abdomen and around the organs just melt away.

You will become more flexible, and your muscles will become more toned, but yoga is mostly for weight loss and muscle toning. If you want to become super-strong or super-flexible, you will need to take part in other activities, also. Yoga is simply a jumping point to bigger and brighter things.
I can enjoy exercise now, without the swelling and worry that I look silly. I can enjoy food without caring if there’s enough for seconds or snacks later. I’ve added years to my life, and taken away inches from my waist. Yoga really helped me to center my life.
