Yoga Postures to eliminate Back Pain

Quite a bit of research supports our theory that exercising properly can and will eliminate back pain. When you get adequate exercise, not only do you retrain weakened muscles, you strengthen them, too! When your muscles are balanced and strong, they can provide more support to your spinal column, which will help to correct any irregularities. Many people take up yoga in order to relieve their back pain. But you might be wondering – what are the proper yoga exercises that you should be doing in order to relieve back pain?

From my experience, I can tell you that the following yoga-based exercises are the absolute best for relieving the aches and pains in your back. Now remember, these 3 exercises are merely suggestions, and you should first and foremost find yourself a capable instructor. Also remember to start with slow and gentle movements as to avoid any discomfort.

1 – Sun Salutation: While standing straight up with your feet comfortably positioned and well balanced, bring your hands to chest-height in prayer position. Now take a nice breath and slowly bring your arms up over your head. If this is comfortable for you, bend forward until your hands touch the floor. If you are a beginner to yoga, I strongly recommend that you only bring our hands to your knees. If you’re struggling with even that, try only raising your arms above your head, until it is comfortable.

2 – The Corpse: Lay down on the floor with your back straight. Make sure that you keep your arms at your side with your palms facing down. Allow your legs to lie naturally, with your knees slightly turned out. Make sure that you are relaxed. Next, breathe deeply for a few moments, allowing all tension to leave your body.

3 – The Cat Pose: Start out with your back straight, on your hands and knees. (Your hands should be directly under your shoulders, and your knees should be directly under the hips). Let your head hang loosely, facing the floor. Breathe in, and as you release the breath, arch the back and bring your chin to your chest. Don’t forget to tuck in your tailbone! Hold the position for a moment, and then return to your original position.

As I said before, please only attempt these poses with the assistance of a trained yoga instructor. Remember to stop at the very first sign of discomfort! Take into consideration, too, that while yoga will help you with your back pain, there are a wide variety of programs for people who suffer from back pain.
